Reverse Osmosis

Reverse Osmosis or RO is a filtering method that can filter various large molecules and ions from a solution by putting pressure on the solution when the solution is on one side of the membrane selection (filter layer). The process makes the solute settle in the layer which is pressurized so that the pure solvent can flow to the next layer. The selection membrane must be selective or able to sort which means that the solvent can be bypassed (or a smaller part of the solution) but it cannot pass through solutes such as large molecules and ions.
